Jack J. Valenti School of Communication Students Get Internship Despite Pandemic
In 2020, the official mark of the COVID-19 pandemic started in Houston after the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) was postponed. HLSR is a non-profit that hosts annual carnivals and events to promote western heritage and agriculture. It is a golden opportunity for students in Valenti school pursuing media production courses to get an internship in the event and enrich their experience and education. The event's cancellation affected the students and the school staff, who were left powerless in securing internships for the students in 2020. Students kept on receiving news that student internships were canceled, and there was no backup plan. This was the message from Valenti's internship coordinator to the students. However, despite HLSR keeping its doors shut from the public, Valenti students were welcomed privately to attend their internships.
It was a wonderful experience for the students to be allowed by HLSR to attend their internship programs despite the pandemic. The opportunity offered the students a three-week intensive internship that helped them advance their careers while demonstrating growth. Working in the Rodeo's social platform was the first taste of the entertainment sector for many students, and it drove their motivation to work in the industry. It helped them to determine where they would like to work in their future careers. Over the past year, although most positions during the internship were virtual, the students learned how to adapt to new working environments.
